Composting

Nowadays we are constantly given opportunities to easily contribute to the recycling movement on our doorstep, one of the most obvious signs of this being the now familiar colour-coded bins. However we can still go one step further and cut down on the amount of space required for landfill sites by recycling our household waste in the garden.

As well as doing our bit for the environment we also benefit from a free, natural resource to fertilise our gardens. Composting doesn’t have to entail smelly heaps at the end of the garden that look slightly unsightly after all that hard work and toil on making the garden look just right.

Composters

Composters come in discreet designs that blend into the landscape hardly unnoticed. Homemade Compost versus Bagged Fertaliser

A huge percentage of our household and garden waste can be used to create compost. Natural garden waste provides the perfect base mix for fertiliser. Lawn clippings and leaves provide essential materials such as potassium, phosphorus and nitrogen. Of course you can buy fertiliser bagged but why waste your money when these fertilisers come with exactly the same properties you get from home composting.

Compost Composition

To get the ideal mix you will need a combination of green and brown materials. Many complicated formulas can be found that look like algebra equations but it doesn’t need to be that complicated. Simply, you will need about 75% brown, made up of material such as dried leaves, shredded dead branches (which can be made easy using shredders) and paper. The other 25% should be made up of green materials such as grass clippings and fruit and vegetable waste. These are simple steps that we can all take to help cut down on the unnecessary amount of household waste. Household and garden waste contributes to a third of all landfills; these natural, organic materials cause methane in landfills and contribute to greenhouse gases.
