The Blackthorn Tree has strong Celtic links with protection and any site which grew Blackthorn along side its sister Hawthorn was thought to be an enchanted area.
The Celts often used spriggs of Blackthorn to decorate bridal chambers, as the musky smell produced by the flowers would stimulate the brides desire for her groom.
The wood of the Blackthorn is a popular material for walking sticks and the berries are often used to flavour Sloe-Gin.
This little fellow is a small shrubby tree and is native to the British Isles.

The Elder Tree has always been considered to be the 'Protective Tree' and its wood was used to make wands to drive out evil. Music played on instruments made of Elder, such as panpipes or flutes, was thought to have the same power as wands and would protect the home from negative influences. The Elder produces berries in the Auntumn and sweet smelling flowers in the Spring and the aroma of Elder flowers are said to deter flies from the garden.
Today Elderberries are still used for making jam, wine and cordial.

The Hawthorn Tree is said to represent true love, partnership and commitment, and the Celts often refered to the Hawthorn as "The Marriage Tree".
Wands made from Hawthorn wood were thought to be very powerful and were often used in spells for love and marriage. The blossoms are also reputed to be highly erotic to men.
The Hawthorn Tree was associated with May Day celebrations and was known as the ’May Tree’ or the ’Tree of Fertility’.
It was symbolic of protection and often planted around homes and churches as a protective shield, and is still used as a hedging today. Any site which grows both Hawthorn and its brother Blackthorn is thought to be an enchanted area.
It was also a common practice to attach spriggs of Hawthorn to the cradles of newborn babies to protect against illness and evil spirits.
Hawthorn berries are still used to make jelly and wine.

The ’Tree of Knowledge’, The Celts associated the Hazel Tree with wisdom and inspiration and it was thought that new skills and knowledge could be gained by eating Hazelnuts. Hazelnuts were often presented to those facing a particularly tough challenge. During weddings it was a tradition for children to present the bride with a bag of Hazelnuts in order to bless her with good fortune.
Today Hazelnuts are enjoyed at Christmas time and are quite a delicacy for the local wildlife. It’s also a tradition for children to shake a Hazel tree during Halloween and collect the falling nuts.
Hazel Trees can grow to around 20ft (6m) and will make a strong, dense hedge if cut and laid.
