Britain's become a nation of garden snobs

Wednesday, May 30 2007 11:12:49 by Editor

Vegetable Gardens New research into the most desirable plants for outside a gardener's home has revealed that the traditional favourites like geraniums and carnations are being shunned in favour of more exotic blooms.

According to the results of a survey carried out by UKTV Garden, certain plants can even add or take away value of the gardener's home, with leylandii, ivy and pampas grass being named as the worst plants for devaluing a property.

Other plants which could put off potential buyers include wisteria, bamboo, carnations, Magnolias and the good old privet hedge.

Improving the value of your home could be as simple as planting a few roses though, with 79 per cent of respondents confessing that these blooms would endear them to a property. Jasmine and lavender were also popular, as was a healthy, green lawn and a vegetable patch.

Unsurprisingly, distasteful garden ornaments were seen as a real turn-off with two-thirds of those asked saying garden gnomes would put them off viewing the house behind them.
