Plastic deck chairs are set to become a thing of the past as sales of eco-friendly garden furniture went through the roof this spring.
Reclaimed wood and materials from sustainable sources not only look stylish but have the relevant green credentials to make them every environmentally-conscious gardener's must-have item, according to leading supermarket chains and garden centres.
Marks & Spencer has already designed its whole outdoor range from sustainable woods and Sally Bendelow, the head of home design at M&S, recently revealed to the Times that more is to come.
"By 2012, all of the wooden products M&S sells will carry Forestry Stewardship Council certification, so customers will know they're not contributing to the destruction of global forests," she explained.
Asda too has launched a garden furniture range made entirely from reclaimed oak. "Customers are becoming increasingly aware of the need to buy green," Martine Levine, marketing manager of Asda, said.
