Garden backs wind plans

Wednesday, October 03 2007 09:20:19 by Leigh Jackson

Natural Fuels & Renewable Energy Leigh Jackson writes: Alnwick Garden Trust has backed plans to build a wind farm in Northumberland, even though the district council has rejected the proposal.

The trust, like the council, believe that the proposed Middlemoor site is unsuitable for the farm but think that the plans should go ahead if a more suitable home can be found, the BBC reports.

Commenting on the plans, John Lovett, chairman of the trust, told the broadcaster: "It's true that we're concerned about this, mainly because of the size, as it will be visible to visitors travelling into Northumberland, who come to see the county's unspoilt landscape.

"We're not against green energy, but it should be a case of the right renewable in the right place. There are more suitable places for this to be built."

Npower, the firm behind the plans, estimate that the 150 metre high turbines will produce enough electricity to power every home in Alnwick and Berwick.

A three-week enquiry into the plans will begin in mid-November.
