James Martin lends hand to green cause
Leigh Jackson writes: Celebrity chef James Martin lent a hand to a south Yorkshire school hoping to build a brand new sensory garden.
The Denaby Main Primary School created a new sustainable, interactive outdoor space and the culinary icon was hungry to get involved, the South Yorkshire Times reports.
Commenting on the garden, Martin told the publication: "It's been fantastic because the kids came in at nine this morning and by lunchtime they had these new gardens."
He added: "My grandparents had an allotment and I used to go down and eat tomatoes from it. It's nice to see where food comes from, something that I think is dying out but projects like this help to bring that learning back."
And hoping that the space could also promote healthy eating, he concluded: "You can ask children about sprouts and cabbage and they will tell you that they don't like them but if they plant them and watch them grow then it might just change their minds."
The garden is part of an ambitious Yorkshire Water scheme called One Million Green Fingers aiming to create 350 sustainable school gardens by 2010.
