Residents given waste opportunity

Monday, November 26 2007 14:05:16 by Leigh Jackson

Ethical Living Leigh Jackson writes: Locals of Amber Valley in Nottingham have been given the opportunity to have their garden waste collected.

From next April, residents of the region can pay £39 per annum to have the rubbish collected for them and disposed of, The Nottingham Evening Post reports.

However, councillor Jack Brown has urged people to make their own compost to make full use of their garden refuse.

"It is better for the environment to home-compost and we would always encourage residents to compost their garden waste wherever possible," he said.

Coun. Brown added: "We've decided to introduce the new garden waste collection service in direct response to requests from residents who have been asking the council to collect garden waste.

"Although this new service isn't coming into force until the spring, we're asking residents to register their interest now to enable us to effectively plan ahead."

Meanwhile, the Shropshire Wildlife Trust has launched a new campaign to raise funds to protect a number of ancient holly trees.
