School creates organic garden

Thursday, July 10 2008 18:02:20 by Alison Patel

Environmental Gardener Alison Patel writes: A primary school has created an organic garden with support from local businesses.

Manuden Primary School is hoping to grow their own fruit and vegetables from seeds and will use organic plants to deter pests.

The project is part of a government initiative by the Department for Children, Schools and Families and is designed to show that teaching and learning can take place outside the classroom.

Head teacher Linda Talbot said: "We love our new school garden. It has really stimulated the children’s enthusiasm for gardening. We’re looking forward to developing the raised beds within our school curriculum to create further learning opportunities throughout the school."

Ms Talbot said that the garden has helped to teach pupils to develop their sense of touch, taste, smell and sight.

Builder's merchant's Buildbase have given support to the project and the Tony Archer manager of the Harlow branch said of the project: "Everyone at Manuden is so proud of their new garden and is excited to see it establish over the coming months."

He continued: "Over 30 schools have built their own gardens and we want to make it as easy as possible for others to follow."
