Alison Patel writes: Celebrity gardener and president of the Soil Association, Monty Don, has asked for the group to consider changing the word "organic" to "sustainable" to prevent isolating people from the cause.
The Guardian reported that the former Gardeners World presenter has said that he feels the association, the UK's biggest organics organisation, needs to change their terminology.
He said it was important to tackle the misconception that organic food is for "wealthy, middle class people indulging in their penchant for peasant food".
He continued: "Organic is loaded with a sense of rightness, with a set of rules. We've got to move away from making people feel lesser because they're not [eating] organic."
Monty Don wants to see the role of the Soil Association expand beyond its current remit as a certifying body for organic food.
He believes its purpose should be to help the UK's 11 million gardeners to grow more of their own fruit and vegetables.
