Mulch appeal

Monday, November 24 2008 12:45:15 by Alison Patel

Recycling & Mulching Alison Patel writes: There are multiple ways gardeners can use mulch in gardens and the Times has been paying tribute to the "truly poetic contribution" it can add.

By putting a layer of mulch over soil, borders and pots will look instantly tidier.

Perhaps more importantly, mulch provides valuable protection against the elements.

Wind erosion can be kept at bay and frost can be held away from the roots of tender plants by adding some mulch.

What’s more, it can be used to retain moisture and slow down evaporation in the summer.

Organic materials will also help to enrich and improve the soil that can only be a good thing for gardeners.

The Times has suggested that while garden compost provides the cheapest mulch, seeds and weeds should be rooted out before spreading on plants.

Other options for mulch include shredded bark, crushed shells, tumbled recycled glass and gravel and slate.

According to the Royal Horticultural Society, mulch also acts as a weed suppressant and a pest deterrent.
