Alison Patel writes: They may not be the first thing that those interested in food growing may think of, but both corn and peppers offer a great harvest if done well.
Rebecca Perry, writing for the Dallas Morning News, highlighted tips suggested in the book Carrots Love Tomatoes, that sweetcorn lovers can grow the plant alongside potatoes, peas, beans and cucumbers and come up with a bumper crop.
For those interested in growing sweet peppers, basil and okra are best placed alongside.
"Both corn and peppers need a sunny location ... make sure the planting area is free of weeds, so the new plants dont have to compete with weeds for nutrients," Ms Perry said.
Corn seeds should be planted approximately three to four inches apart in short rows, making them a better option for those who have more space.
Peppers should be planted a couple of feet apart and require plenty of water to keep them growing well.
For the more experienced gardener, growing new vegetables can be a fun and fulfilling way or learning new things.
