Daniel Shane writes: Local councils up and down the UK are looking to give gardeners food for thought with Compost Awareness Week.
The event, which runs until Saturday (May 9th), aims to promote the benefits of growing fruit and vegetables in the confines of one's own garden.
As part of the week, expert compost producers are hoping to show that food and other natural waste can make a cheap and sustainable source of fertiliser.
A representative for the Association of Organics Recycling, which helped arrange the event, commented: "This year we will be encouraging people to put their compost to good use by trying their hand at growing their own fruit and vegetables as a way to go green and save money."
Recent research by the Horticultural Trades Association revealed that almost a third of Britons are planning on spending more time in their gardens in 2009 than they did last year.
