The credit crunch has not only affected business, but could have hit gardeners as well.
As such, one expert has given her advice as to how to do things on a budget.
Anna Wincze, speaking to for the Hartford Courant, has given her personal tricks of the trade to save cash.
Composting was highlighted as one of the quickest and cheapest ways of creating a great garden.
Wincze creates her own fertilizer my combining egg shells with water, which she claims works excellently.
When plants die, she urges turning them into potpourri, a great recycling tip and possible gift opportunity for those that use it.
To make more opportunities to grow vegetables, Ms Wincze suggested growing kale and lettuce as borders, while flowers such as violets can be added to salads.
Nasturtiums came up for particular praise.
"I use them as a border - they're low and lush. The flowers are beautiful for salads. And they're good companion plants if you have a plant that is susceptible to aphids," she claimed.
