Tyneside kids help with church garden revamp

Wednesday, June 24 2009 12:00:15 by Editor

Ethical Living A group of 13 and 14-year-olds in Tyneside have helped revamp the garden of the Church of the Good Shepherd in Burradon.

The initiative is one of 70 programmes based in 70 crime prevention projects across the country, Chronicle Live reported.

A number of pupils from Year 9 at Seaton Burn Community College took part in the project, which aimed to make the garden more attractive.

The church got in touch with Community Space Challenge in May 2008, with organisers asking the school for help to redesign the space.

As well as revamping, the project also gave participants the chance to learn more about horticulture and landscaping which they could then take on to other projects.

Seaton Burn Community College won an award for its green activities in May, with the Woodland Trust giving it a gold award for reducing carbon emissions and recycling.

In addition to gardening, it is hoped that the project will encourage greater community integration between young and old.
