Monday, July 20 2009 16:20:27 by Editor

Water Conservation A scheme which gives youngsters a chance to get involved in tree planting and waterway operation has been launched in Scotland.

Aimed at 16 to 24-year-olds, the Green Action scheme, which is run by the Waterways Trust in Scotland, gives participants the chance to get a feel for working in the conservation sector.

Based at the Action Outdoors Centre in Falkirk, the scheme will enable the young helpers to gain skills and qualifications that will help them into work.

Karen Moore from Waterways Trust said: "Recent employment statistics highlight the issues ahead for the younger generation in particular.

"This project will help some of the area's young people gain knowledge and skills to boost their confidence and to competitively compete in the job market."

Those who take part in the scheme will learn landscaping, tree planting and maintanence, general gardening skills and towpath repairs, as well as a host of other skills which will help them into work.
