Monday, August 10 2009 17:51:46 by Editor

Lawns & Gardens A prestigious award has been bestowed upon a garden that lies on the site of a former car park.

Sussex Heritage Trust has awarded the Collector Earl's Garden at Arundel Castle after it was transformed into a "sub tropical" garden which has areas for live music, theatre and other forms of public exhibition.

The Heritage Trust accolades have been running for 12-years and are judged on criteria regarding conservation, preservation and restoration over several categories.

Arundel Castle's Collector Earl's Garden was inspired by architect Inigo Jones and Thomas Howard, the 14th Earl of Arundel.

Prominent features in the garden include a domed pergola, a green oak temple and fountains, as well as a host of sub tropical plants.

Other projects that were named as winners of this year's awards include the redesigned and restored 19th century walled garden at Fairlight Hall and the Meadow Garden, Chestnut Tree House garden of remembrance in Hastings.
