A local group from Brampton in Cumberland has prepared a bid to secure £300,000 in funding to set up a commercial garden.
Sustainable Brampton has got ambitious plans to develop an eight-acre site to grow organic fruit and vegetables which would then be distributed via a box scheme.
The group hopes to secure funding from both the Local Food Fund (Big Lottery) and the Solway Border and Eden Leader Programme.
Vice-chair of Sustainable Brampton Mike Downham told the Cumberland News: "The market garden is an important step to making this area a bit less dependent on far away places for its essential food supplies.
"We have some way to go in getting it established and various negotiations are in hand, but we are optimistic that we will have a firm project in place within the next few months."
The team has managed to secure the help of the local council, which has agreed to pen a letter of support regarding the group's plans, according to the local news provider.
