When it comes to looking after a plot of land, gardeners have been urged not to bite off more than they can chew.
According to gardening expert Helen Yemm, it is very important to take on an allotment that is the right size for you.
Writing in the Telegraph, she explained a whole allotment plot, approximately the size of a tennis court, will be too big for most.
"A half-plot like mine may be sufficient for the average 'part-time' household," she suggested.
"Furthermore, with huge waiting lists nationwide, splitting a whole plot and sharing it with the next person or family on the list makes good sense."
Ms Yemm also urged people to improve the soil in their allotments with an "annual muck spreading frenzy" and to get rid of all the weeds before planting any crops.
Earlier this month, details of a new pilot scheme in reading were announced which will allow gardeners to pay for their garden waste to be converted into nutrient-rich compost.
