Parents urged to grow fruit and veg with kids

Sunday, September 06 2009 08:42:56 by Editor

Vegetable Gardens A new campaign has been launched to encourage parents to get involved in gardening with their kids.

Before the start of the school summer break, the Independent's Let Children Grow campaign saw pupils at 1,250 schools across the UK planting their own fruit and vegetable crops.

Now, with the new academic year about to begin, the newspaper has reported that parents are being suggested to go in with their kids and see what has come about from six weeks of growing.

Backed by the Royal Horticultural Society (RHS), the Get Your Grown-Ups Growing initiative will launch in Yorkshire this month and across the rest of the UK in 2010, urging parents to pass on their gardening know-how to younger generations.

"Parents will be encouraged to visit schools to help children and teachers do the garden, tend the crops and hopefully become inspired along the way," the Independent explained.

"If the scheme works, the RHS hopes parents will return each week."

In other news, the Daily Telegraph reported last week that police are currently investigating a number of incidents involving attacks on show vegetables grown in Torquay.
