One in five children remains connected with nature

Sunday, September 13 2009 11:06:49 by Editor

Ethical Living More than two million children have visited the Woodland Trust's nature detectives website since it was launched five years ago.

According to the conservation group, one in five kids spent time on the website learning about wildlife and nature rather than in front of a TV or games console.

Highlighting the milestone, it warned that children who become disconnected from nature and the outside world risk losing environmental awareness and even self-confidence.

The Woodland Trust's Shaun Nixon said: "Although common knowledge would suggest children are spending less time in the natural world the massive demand for our free materials proves children still have the desire to learn about what's around them."

In other news, a teacher from Chester recently stood on the Fourth Plinth in London's Trafalgar Square as part of Antony Gormley's One and All art installation to promote the wildlife protection work done by the Woodland Trust.
