Carbon capture and storage 'could help reduce UK emissions'
New research into carbon capture and storage (CCS) has been welcomed by green charity Friends of the Earth.
In response to the British Geographical Survey's plans to trial the method in the North Sea, energy campaigner Nick Rau said that CCS could play a significant role in tackling climate change.
He commented: "CCS could help reduce UK emissions while we shift our energy supplies from dirty fossil fuels to clean, renewable sources such as wind, tidal and wave.
"It is far safer and cheaper alternative to cutting emissions using new nuclear technologies."
Earlier this month, the Institute for Public Policy Research reported that if UK carbon emissions are not reduced by the end of 2012, proposals for personal carbon trading will be considered by the government.
In order to meet climate change targets, Brits need to cut emissions by at least 40 per cent by 2020.
Experts advise that adopting green practices in the home and garden can help boost energy efficiency on a personal level.
According to Friends of the Earth, this can be achieved by further investment in renewable energy, efficiency and green technology.
