The British Tomato Gardeners Association (TGA) hosted its third Tastiest Tomato Competition this month, attracting both professional and amateur fruit and vegetable growers from across the UK.
Held at West Dean Gardens near Chichester, the event awarded entrants in a selection of different size categories including cherry and baby plum, cocktail and beefsteak.
Julie Woolley from the TGA commented: "Naturally we are delighted with the results, though this summer again hasn't been great for growing tomatoes outside in the garden.
"It does prove that growing our crops in glasshouses as we do, we can produce a fantastic product, pretty much whatever the weather throws at us."
She added that four out of five tomatoes currently sold in the UK are imported, meaning that consumers are not always getting the "best of British food".
According to the TGA, the largest UK tomato glasshouse covers 22 acres.
Recent reports from the gardening world suggest that more Brits are growing their own fruits and vegetables as a means to save money and eat healthily during the recession.
