Locals clear the way for more allotments

Thursday, February 15 2007 12:15:23 by Editor

Ethical Living The 80 public-spirited members of an allotment association in Nuneaton, North Warwickshire, have been toiling for the greater good – clearing land at their allotment site to enable new gardening enthusiasts to join the club.

The association members are working to carve out nine new plots from the site, bringing more gardeners together in what local councillor Tony Lloyd told iccoventry.co.uk is "a relaxing, sociable way to garden".

There's something in it for the existing members, too – after clearing the greenery with a chipper, they'll mulch the product down to feed their own hungry plots through the last weeks of the winter and into the start of the 2007 gardening season.

This neighbourly group are committed to spawning more green-fingered garden-lovers in the vicinity – the association also runs an advice shed at the allotments throughout the weekend to help anyone starting out or looking to diversify with friendly tips.

Composting and gardening materials are sold from the advice shed, too - so the mulch could even come in handy for fertilising the newcomers' plots in what must be close to the perfect miniature ecosystem.
