British official urges green gardening

Monday, March 05 2007 06:50:37 by Editor

Ethical Living One of Britain's environmental attaches has urged people around the world to adopt greener methods in their gardening.

Dan Hamza-Goodacre, a British embassy environmental attache, gave a series of tips to gardeners to become more eco-friendly, from using less chemicals to promoting tree growth.

"It seems obvious that gardens and the environment go together," the environmental expert said at the Bahrain International Exhibition Centre, the Gulf Daily News reports.

"Gardens are at the mercy of the climate they live in. We need to encourage people to be aware of this."

He proposed such gardening measures as using solar-powered or energy efficient lighting and the harvesting of rainwater.

In addition, Mr Hamza-Goodacre urged people to not only use chemical pesticides and added that "it's not about having the best lawn in the world, but doing things more naturally".

Gardeners "should also look to encourage wildlife to their garden by putting up bird boxes and creating ladybird banks", he concluded.
